In spite of his young age, Montoya is an athlete with an important strength and a great palmares. In the young categories, he won some National Championships. In 2005 and 2006 he got some important results in international competitions - like as the Canadian TransRockies, where he arrived twice at the third position, and the Red Bull Moonride, where he got the 2nd place. He won the Ruta de los Conquistadores in 2004 and in 2005 he arrived at the third position, defeating at the last sprint Thomas Frischknecht. In 2006, he won the U-23 Chronometer Road National Championship arriving at the second place of the Under 23 MTB National Championship.
